Winemaker tasting with Alexander Jules

"Alex and I crossed paths years ago around the time of the very first SherryFest, several years before TOFINO WINES opened. I thought he was brilliant and a little crazy... a man whose primary background was in coffee bean purchasing was going to the deep, dark corners of Jerez & Sanlúcar de Barrameda and finding forgotten soleras, tasting hundreds of barrels, convincing the owners to sell him a barrel or two, bottling them and bringing them back to educate and dazzle Americans. Alex has done as much or more than any single person in this country to assist in reviving Sherry's fortunes and highlighting why Sherry is so unique" - Mark, TOFINO WINES

Alexander Jules is Russan's label, and the final product of all of his searching,  limited bottlings of his barrel selected sherries. He looks across the Sherry Triangle for exceptional soleras of unique composition or circumstance, tasting each barrel in the solera, marking those he finds to be the most complex and elegant, or those that reflect the profile he would like to bring out from within that solera.  All bottlings are en rama, being only gently filtered or entirely unfiltered, with no other treatments or additions.

We will be pouring:

  • Alexander Jules Manzanilla

  • Alexander Jules Fino 9|65

  • Alexander Jules Amontillado 3|10

  • Alexander Jules Amontillado "Sin Prisa" 1|42 - special, single source bottling

  • Tosca Cerrada Palomino En Rama (unfortified palomino)

Tasting Fee: 5 wines for $15, applicable to the purchase of 2 or more bottles of featured wines the night of the tasting.

Stay tuned for details soon on upcoming winemaker & small importer tastings and seminars!

THE SPACE

With the feel of a faraway railway station discovered somewhere in the south of Spain or north of France, Tofino Wines is a dramatic, 2,500 sq. ft. space, with 20 ft. high ceilings and large picture windows that provide abundant natural light and street views. A comfortable, airy seating area features original 1920’s terra cotta tile floors, walnut tables, and a window bar overlooking Geary and Masonic streets. Exposed concrete columns and a polished concrete floor are offset by a hand-crafted marble bar and service counter, and custom-designed walnut shelving for wine retail. A former vault has been enclosed in glass and serves as a room for wine storage, private tastings and events. Vintage French railway station light fixtures hang in the space, and original 1950’s bus rolls from Vancouver, B.C. adorn the walls.
